Welcome
My name is Agnieszka Carruthers and I am a fully qualified counsellor specialising in Transactional Analysis (TA). My preferred pronouns are she/her.
Originally from Poland, I settled down in Cumbria almost 20 years ago and now I call the beautiful market town of Cockermouth home.
Throughout my training as a therapist, I underwent personal therapy and witnessed its profound transformative impact. I am passionate about providing you with a safe space where you can explore your feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.
I hold a Diploma in Transactional Analysis Counselling and a Masters in Pedagogy.
I have experience of working with various presenting issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, long term illness, ASD, ADHD and childhood abuse. I also have an experience of supporting carers. My special interests are in transgenerational trauma, cultural script, EcoTA and neurodivergence- particularly in the context of late diagnosis.
I am a registered member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), UKATA (UK Association for Transactional Analysis), EATA (European Association for Transactional Analysis) and I adhere to the codes of ethical practice.

How do I work?
In therapy, I believe in creating a safe space where you can express your true self. My core training is in Transactional Analysis (TA) and I think that a good therapeutic relationship can foster lasting change. I aim to help you make new meanings and facilitate your growth. I will walk alongside you on your journey, ask questions and where appropriate, I will gently challenge your thinking.
In my practice, alongside talking therapy, I use various creative methods like metaphors, images, drawing and raising awareness of your body responses.
What to expect in first session?
Initial Assessment
When you decide that you would like to take the first step in your therapeutic journey, then we will arrange an initial assessment session. In this meeting, we will get to know each other a bit better. I will explain how I work, and I will ask you questions about what brings you to therapy and what are your expectations. This session will provide you with a glimpse of my style of working and will give you a sense of whether I am the person you would like to work with.
